they attached an iv, they checked her vitals, they milled about her talking of things, cars passed beside her, tiny dead leaves fluttered from the tree above her, people hovered. Her eyes watched them and she stiffened. I thought, what fear, to have been crushed in the night by a building collapsing on you, to be taken to a hospital and get the curb of the hospital parking lot instead, to lay and watch strangers moving about you, to have them talk above you in mutterings of a language you do not understand, and to have no loving family to touch you or reassure you or promise you life really isn’t that hard and will resume normalcy soon. I reached down and held a spot on her left arm and just rubbed it and rubbed it and cooed for her. Her name was Donata. She lives in Port-auPrince
