don’t forget the rest of the world

I have flown to Arkansas to meet with a group of people about what we will do in Haiti. But it is not Haiti that occupies me tonight. Tonight I am occupied by thoughts of all the other places where the unnamed ones quietly live through their poverty. I am occupied with thoughts of so many I have met and who I know are still there in whatever village or city where I last caught sight of them. Like her in this picture, the girl Miguel and I met last summer. She lives in Pankawas, a remote village on the Rio Coco. War could break out again soon. The indigenous are threatening to break away from the heavily-armed Nicaraguan central government. It might happen. Just like it happened two decades ago and a war raged weirdly in unpopulated places. If it does crack open she will still be there, just like she is in this picture. Haiti is at the front of our strategizing today but I don’t want to forget she is there in the jungle on the withered limb of our continent. I don’t want to forget her just because I am busy helping someone else. Remember with me.
